Starz Announces New Installment to Power Universe with the Prequel, Power:Origins

By: Joshua Martin

Starz officially announced its plans to proceed with its next installment in the Power universe. A prequel, Power: Origins will center around Ghost and Tommy as young hustlers determined to make a name in the streets of New York City. The premiere is set to begin with 18 episodes and Mekai Curtis, star of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, will return as Kanan Stark.

“I’m excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the PowerUniverse’s founding fathers. Ghost and Tommy’s backstories have fueled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I’m thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won’t see coming.” - Sascha Penn, showrunner, writer and executive producer, via statement.

“Our fans have been asking for Ghost and Tommy’s origins story since we first met them in Power — and with the launch of this series, we’re delivering in a big way. This marks an electrifying new chapter in the franchise’s evolution as we dive deep into the legacy of these iconic characters and the explosive moments that shaped their path.” - Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for STARZ

Michael Rainey Jr. in Power Book II: Ghost

The recent news comes ahead of the final season of Power Book IV: Force and follows the conclusion of Raising Kanan’s explosive fourth season. Power Book II: Ghost ended in 2024 but Michael Rainey Jr. has teased his reprisal in the future.

“However that happens — whether it is a little baby picture in Origins — I’m happy to bring Tariq to the screen for the people. So however that may be [possible],” he told PEOPLE in October 2024. “The [Power] universe, our universe never ends. We got Origins coming… It never ends.” - Michael Rainey Jr. via PEOPLE magazine in October 2024

It is currently unclear if Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora will return for Origins but Sikora has expressed interest in narrating. Similar to how 50 Cent does for Raising Kanan.
