When it comes to being recognized for their creative talents, the state of Mississippi often goes overlooked. A former athlete turned artist invokes the powerful words uttered by Hip Hop legend Andre 3000 at the infamous 1995 Source Awards. “The South got something to say.” 

Hip Hop artist Jabari 'Safari' Harris uses his experiences on the gridiron and in life to vividly paint pictures about embracing your imperfections, evolving with intentions and quite frankly enjoying the moment. 

Currently based in Norway, Harris thoroughly understands his role in music and wants to empower and positively influence the next generation, starting with his son.

Surface Grey is really big on helping artists from his city get attention because he understands there's no need for gatekeeping. He hosts music camps for upcoming artists in Houston to show support for them. He stresses that togetherness is key among artists, so he's willing to provide them with any information they need to succeed in the industry.

He recently dropped an album called Magnum Opus that features some bangers. Check it out below, as he mentioned he will be releasing the deluxe version soon.

Growing up in a church instilled in him a deep connection to music, inspiring him to evoke emotions through his own music. He sought to establish that same connection with his audience so they could feel the emotions conveyed in his songs.

He creates various types of music within the hip-hop genre, ranging from songs about gang life to inspirational and thought-provoking tracks. Some of his favorites from his catalog are “Do Not Disturb”, “Lead Us Not”, “Thinking Out Loud”, and “Never Take A Loss”.

He also discusses how gang culture significantly affects Los Angeles and how people in the South support each other, while in LA, nobody wants to promote or uplift others. Benji also offers valuable advice to rappers coming out to LA regarding the so-called “Check-In” myth, emphasizing the importance of networking, knowing the people you talk to, and expressing his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone who reaches out to him.
