Jayson Tatum Secures Largest Contract In NBA History With Extension From Celtics

Just days after winning their league-leading 18th title, the Boston Celtics took little time ensuring fans that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will be in Boston for the foreseeable future. Despite not winning Finals MVP, Tatum now can claim the distinct honor of having the richest contract in NBA history. The new 5 year deal worth a record $314 million, overtakes his teammate and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown’s $285 million deal, which at the time was the richest in league history.

Tatum was a force this season despite being highly scrutinized. During the Celtics impressive playoff run he averaged 25 points, just under 10 rebounds, and six assists per game. Adding veteran pieces such as Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to an already talented roster increased the pressure to win a championship. After years of coming up short, they finally got the job done against the Dallas Mavericks in a convincing 5 games.

BOSTON CELTICS ARE YOUR 2024 NBA CHAMPIONS 🏆 | 2024 NBA Finals

Tatum’s career accolades include a championship, a new record setting deal, 3 straight First Team All-NBA selections and 5 straight All-Star selections. Not bad before the age of 26.

Next season, the Celtics look to win back-to-back championships for the first time since the 2017 and 2018 Golden State Warriors. They will once again have a talented core after resigning guard Derrick White to a new deal also. Even with Kristaps on the mend, and inevitable age and regression, this Celtics team looks like they will be a thorn in the side of all NBA teams for years to come.

Jaylen Brown, star forward of the Boston Celtics, is set to make NBA history with a massive contract. His agent, Jason Glushon, confirmed that Brown has agreed to sign a five-year, supermax extension worth a staggering $304 million, making it the richest deal ever in NBA history. This lucrative extension became possible for Brown after he earned All-NBA Second Team honors for the 2022-23 season.

The jaw-dropping extension will take effect in the 2024-25 season, where Brown will earn an unprecedented $52.4 million, setting a new record for the highest single-season salary for any NBA player. In the final year of the contract, Brown's earnings will reach an astonishing $69.1 million.

This remarkable deal surpasses the previous record holder, Nikola Jokic, who secured a $276 million extension in 2022. Notably, Brown's contract also includes a guaranteed trade kicker, although he had to forgo the typical player option that stars usually have in their final year under contract to receive this exceptional compensation.

Throughout the early months of the summer, it wasn't always certain that Jaylen Brown's new contract with the Boston Celtics would come to fruition. However, the new deal has now been confirmed, keeping the forward in Celtic green until the 2028-29 season.

Brown recently had the best season of his career, boasting impressive averages of 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. His outstanding performance earned him an All-Star selection and a spot in the All-NBA Second Team.

Despite his performance, Celtics fans questioned Brown’s ability to fit in with star All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum. The Celtics failed to make a return to the NBA Finals this past season causing fans and analysts to actively pushing for a trade involving Jaylen Brown. However, historical data suggests that the Brown-Tatum duo is arguably one of the most formidable one-two punches in the NBA currently.

During the previous season, the duo combined for an impressive 56.7 points per game, ranking as the fourth-highest scoring duo since the 1976-77 merger, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

71-point Performance by Donovan Mitchell Prompted a Drug Tested by NBA

Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Donovan Mitchell, had a game for the ages Monday night against the Chicago Bulls. The all star guard scored 71 points that earned him an early morning drug test from the NBA! We discuss it here!

26 year old Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Donovan Mitchell, had a record breaking game in scoring against the Chicago Bulls. January 2nd, Monday night Mitchell torched the Bulls with a whooping 71 point performance followed with 11 assists to complete a double double. He also hauled in 8 rebounds as well. While his memorable night energized basketball fans around the world, the NBA wanted to validate his performance by drug testing him.

Even though the action seems like it’s not random because of the timing, it’s completely legal according to the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association. It reads that players are subjected to four random tests during the year; two during the season and two during the off season. So after the 71 point performance, the league used one of their random tests to make sure Mitchell is an honest player.

Donovan isn’t the first player randomly selected to have a drug test. De’Aron Fox of the Sacramento Kings was subject to one after posting workout videos online. Even Bradly Beal after back to back 50 point games a couple seasons ago had to go through it.

Some fans are arguing that the NBA should test the All NBA guard Luka Doncic, who is having an MVP caliber year himself.

Mitchell was hot from the field shooting 64 percent from the floor, while making 7 3-pointers, and finishing the game out strong in overtime with 13 points to erase a 21-point deficit to get a win against the Bulls. He is just the seventh player in the league’s history to score 70 points in a game. The last player to accomplish the feat of 70 points is Phoenix Suns All star Guard Devin Booker in a loss to the Boston Celtics on March 24, 2017.

Mitchell joins the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, David Thompson, Elgin Baylor, David Robinson and Devin Booker as the only players to score 70 or more points in an NBA game.

Atlanta, GA — Around the country, people have become witnesses to the loss of black lives by the hands of police brutality. The losses of Ahmaud Abery, Breonna Taylor, and finally George Floyd on Memorial Day hit a deep nerve in the psyche of the black community.

Uprisings for justice started in Minneapolis and spread quickly, reaching major cities around the country. This triggered celebrities and politicians to come divided on the subject of whether violence is the answer. But, the importance of Black People using a platform in situations that directly affect a marginalized group is key because there are few of us that will get to reach the stratosphere where we can reach the voices of millions.

How one uses that platform in critical situations can make or break the entire foundations of which they worked so hard to reach. Athletes in particular have been scrutinized for riding the fine line of advocating for social action, and sticking to the skill of their sport. But it’s impossible for a Black athlete to ignore injustices that they face, regardless of what sport they play or how much money they receive from their contract.

A Georgia Native and growing NBA Phenom decided to ignore the criticisms of those around him and  took immediate action, driving 15 hours from Boston to Atlanta, proving that his city is bigger than what was portrayed by mainstream media outlets.

Celtics Forward, Jaylen Brown organized a peaceful protest in the span of less than a day. He’s no stranger to social action and fellowship to his peers, speaking at summits at MIT and Harvard. The Marietta native and Wheeler High School Alum planned to start the at the CNN Center, which was damaged the day before, and end at the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Site.

With the high risk of the CNN Center being damaged again, the location was changed to the MLK Memorial Site, where people would gather between 5:30 and 6:30pm. Brown would emerge from the crowd of onlookers, where he would share words as to why he was compelled to organize the demonstration.

“You may know me as an athlete, entrepreneur, educator, philanthropist. But first and foremost I am a Black man.” Said Brown. “I’m not gonna speak on anything that’s not new, everything that we’re seeing and experiencing is something from decades, centuries, ages ago. So as a 23 year-old […]  some people from other generations ‘gone have to bare with us.”

Brown would not shy away from his pride in being Black, whilst peacefully walking and chanting through the Historically Black Sweet Auburn District. Bystanders would cheer on the crowd marching down Auburn Avenue, through Georgia State University and finally stopping at the Georgia State Capitol Building.

“We can’t take no more! There’s no more cheeks left to turn!” Said Brown. “Since I was in high school all I’ve seen is Trayvon Martin, all I’ve seen is Oscar Grant […] that’s all I’ve seen! All I know is traumatic instances!”

Aside from Brown, fellow NBA player, Malcolm Brogdon and rapper, Lil Yachty would join Brown on the march through the streets of their home, giving positive remarks to the crowd.

The protest was almost entirely peaceful, though three people were wrongfully arrested by the Atlanta Police Department, according to Brown. The motive was thought to be due to the risk the protesters were while occupying the streets of the empty Georgia State University Campus through the march.

Brown plans on assisting the three with legal fees, and continues to advocate against the horrors of police brutality.
