At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, Laila Edwards etched her name into sports history as the first Black woman to compete for the United States in Olympic women’s ice hockey. A breakthrough moment not just for hockey but for African American representation in winter sports.

The 22 year old Cleveland Heights, Ohio native and University of Wisconsin standout stepped onto the ice with Team USA during the preliminary round, helping her squad open the tournament with a resounding 5-1 victory over Czechia. During the match, Edwards became the first Black woman to score a goal for the U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team, delivering a defining moment in Olympic competition.

I take a lot of pride in it and I’m just going to embrace it, because representation matters. No matter how uncomfortable it can be, it’s for the next generation.

Edwards’ journey to the Olympics has been marked by barriers and breakthroughs. Growing up in a sport where Black athletes are rare, she learned early that her path would require both resilience and excellence. Even as she focused on refining her game, the significance of her presence on hockey’s biggest stage has resonated with fans and aspiring athletes alike.

To have my family here supporting me gives me that extra level of motivation, comfort and confidence that I really appreciate.
