What does it take to motivate yourself? You set goals, make plans, get excited, but then procrastinate when it comes time to do something. Many of us are cursed with the ability to feel good about the planning process, but awful about acting on those plans. There’s a disconnect that few people understand how to address.
Master this ability and you can do anything. However, if your ability to tie your planning and action phases together is poor, you’ll struggle immensely.
Enhance your motivation and your results with these strategies:
Give your attention to those things under your control. You can’t control much, but there’s no reason to focus on anything else. Doing so will only lead to feeling overwhelmed. For example, receiving a promotion isn’t under your control. The behaviors that improve your odds are under your control.
Put your time, energy, and attention on the things you can manipulate. Avoid wasting your resources on anything you can’t influence.
Find a purpose that inspires you. Going into work on Saturday to complete a report might sound like the least enjoyable way to spend part of your weekend, but if excelling at your job could lead to the promotion you’ve been dreaming of, it’s easier to be motivated.
Most people don’t like to work out, but the prospect of being healthier and more attractive is motivating to many people.
Avoid judging the task or activity in the short-term. Think about what you’ll get out of it down the road. Find a way to take inspired action.
Your inspiration might be a product of what you’re doing for others. How does your goal benefit others?
Focus on small wins. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds over the next year, it’s easy to become burned out. After two hard weeks of hitting the gym, avoiding late night snacks, and drinking only water, you’ve lost a total of two pounds. You’re right on schedule, but you realize that you have 48 weeks and 48 pounds to go. It seems like too much to bear.
Break the goal up into smaller pieces. Depending on your ability to focus, it might be necessary to break up the goal into segments that last anywhere from one week to 12 weeks. This way your brain can experience success and logically see a positive long-term outcome. You’ll procrastinate if the path looks too challenging.
Act first. It’s a mistake to wait for motivation to strike. You might find yourself waiting for a long time. Avoid thinking too much about the work to be done. If you wait too long to get started, procrastination becomes more likely. Before you can stop yourself, get started. You’ll find that motivation is easier to experience after you’ve acted.
Every minute you wait under the guise of “planning” or “strategizing” saps what little motivation you may already have. Jump up and get busy!
Enhance your mood. It’s much harder to be motivated when you’re in a bad mood. Studies have shown that a negative mood increases procrastination behaviors.
Procrastination enhances your mood in the short-term, but at the expense of the future. Put yourself into a better mental state and procrastination becomes less likely to occur.
Happiness increases productivity and success. Monitor your progress. Research suggests that nothing is more motivating than progress in a meaningful endeavor.
Without motivation, you can make spectacular goals and plans and still come up short. The smallest obstacle could stop you. Learning to manage your motivation is a key component of effectively handling challenges and moving on to accomplish great things. Motivate yourself and you can do anything!

The most successful people have an uncanny ability to keep going when everyone else would quit. Your success is tied to your ability to keep working after you have the urge to quit. Quitting is a negative habit, and it’s often learned at a young age. Learn how to continue making progress no matter how strong the urge to quit grows.
Consider the reasons you feel like quitting in the first place:
You lack energy. A lack of energy isn’t just a reason one might quit a marathon. It’s also a common reason for quitting other pursuits. Exhaustion can be physical or mental. To help counteract your exhaustion:
Get a full night of sleep.
Get better control over your schedule.
Streamline your life.
Eat more nutritious foods.
Learn how to relax.
You lack focus. Too many distractions can result in the desire to quit. Are you trying to accomplish too many other things? Some people can deal with more goals than others. If you feel overwhelmed, narrow your focus to your most important goals.
It’s not that important to you. Do you have a good enough reason to keep going? Why are you doing this activity in the first place?
Remind yourself of why it’s important to keep going. Maybe the best motivation you can find is setting a good example for your children. Maybe the most important issue is self-respect. Find a good reason to continue.
Understand the reasons you feel the desire to quit. Whether it’s a bad job or a horrible diet, there are times we all consider quitting. However, quitting isn’t always an adverse choice.
We’ve been taught to believe that quitting is synonymous with failure, but some activities or relationships aren’t worth continuing. It’s important to arrive at a decision to quit or continue consciously, rather than making a reflexive decision.
Try these techniques to avoid quitting prematurely:
Hit the pause button. Most poor decisions could be avoided by taking a short pause. When you’re stressed, overworked, overtired, and fed-up, rash decisions become the norm. Give yourself the time you need to make a wise decision. Allow your head to clear before you make a decision that changes your life. Most decisions can wait.
View the situation objectively. Try to be objective and weigh the situation carefully. Enlist the help of a friend if necessary. It can be easier to evaluate someone else’s situation accurately than your own.
Consider the worst-case scenario. Think long-term. Quitting is an easy choice when you only consider the short-term ramifications. You can relieve your stress almost immediately! However, what are the long-term consequences? If you quit your job, what will happen if you can’t find another one?
Reconsider quitting if the long-term consequences are too severe. A little relief now isn’t worth long-term pain.
Who will be impacted by your quitting? Your boss? Coworkers? Family? The members of your church softball team? Who is affected?
What message are you sending to your children? What would you recommend to a child in a similar circumstance? Your children are always watching. Be sure to set a good example.
Ask yourself if a new approach is warranted. Maybe you shouldn’t quit. Maybe you need a new plan. Not getting the results you desire isn’t necessarily a sign that you should call it quits. Poor results indicate an ineffective process. Perhaps all you need is a tweak to your approach. Major accomplishments are accompanied by numerous failed attempts.
Ask yourself why you’re considering quitting. Is it because you don’t believe you can be successful? You don’t have the resources you require? Do you not enjoy the job, activity, or relationship in question? Are you lacking the necessary time?
Some reasons for quitting are better than others. Quitting a second job you don’t need so you can spend more time with your children is a good reason to quit. Ending your marriage because your spouse won’t pick up his dirty socks might be a bit extreme.
Is there another solution besides quitting?
Consider the times you’ve given up in the past. How do you feel about those events today? Was quitting a good idea or do you regret it? How are you likely to feel in the future about quitting in your current situation? Sometimes it’s necessary to lower your head and keep going. There are times when quitting is the best choice. However, when it’s not the best choice, it’s necessary to be strong and keep going. Stick with that horrible job until you have something else lined up. Give counseling a try before quitting on another relationship.
Take a moment before making a hasty decision. Quitting isn’t to be taken lightly. Before making the decision to quit, consider the consequences, consult with a trusted friend, and consider your history. In some instances, quitting is final. Avoid creating long-term challenges to alleviate stress in the short-term. Give yourself the time you require to make a wise decision.

I know…I know things were supposed to go that way, but they went this way. It is very normal to feel frustration and disappointment when things may not go completely as we envision. Purpose of Planning
It’s common to hear of the idea of a long-term, five-year plan when trying to conceive or make sense of where you want to end up in life. Even a short-term plan of three to six months is seen as a necessity when looking ahead. To be honest, a lot of life and circumstances are left up to chance and preparation. Choosing to work on building yourself and your skill set is more ideal than being focused on specific goalposts that can change at a whim due to outside forces. Having an idea or even a general target is fine to maintain a structure towards what you’re working on, while also allowing yourself to be flexible within the journey.
Reflection on Path
Our world, both digital and real, can be quite noisy and distracting. Many things vie for our attention, finances, and energy, making it borderline exhausting to keep up or even keep track of ourselves at times. Slowing down and taking the time to step back and observe can help with insight and drive, as well as avoid being wasteful with our time. Seeking out some outside perspectives from trusted sources can aid in our decision-making, as well as allow us to see our own actions from a different lens.
Meaning within the Mission
Part of the beauty in something working against our favor, even if it may have been considered a dream or passion project, is the fact that all things tend to come and work together on their own schedule. Carpentry, HVAC, Sanitation Maintenance and Trucking are a few industries that are both flexible in acceptance of employment and availability nationwide which can also provide opportunities to expand and grow. One of the key advantages of any of these industries and others are the skills and tools learned on the job that can translate outside of the workplace and into other related careers or even skills that can be applied within self-employment.
Transferable Abilities
While working on various aspects of the job within the trade sector, you’ll be able to expand your general skillset by both observing and learning from very experienced people in a specific industry or space. Through the addition of certain certifications and eventual licensing for tasks and skills, you become both able to command a higher salary, as well as the confidence to move around without restriction to location and gain income through the skills that you were able to hone and learn.
Combination of Efforts
The traditional model of working will always be a mainstay within what it means to gain an income or excel in a particular profession. Nothing is also wrong with the 9-5 model, as many people are able to both provide for themselves and families, as well as create strong careers. If you are thinking about moving out of your home town this is your sign to take a chance and do it. What does it mean to be from a particular place or space? Also, how is it that we can understand where we’re from if we’re not able to ever see beyond our physical or even personal boundaries? In learning and understanding, both ourselves and others, having a chance to see more of where you come from will always result in a profound impact on your overall journey.
Being able to relate to others is an important characteristic to have during any stage of life, especially if you plan on moving to a new place. Of course, we will learn and gain many perspectives from our natural environment just by growing up and being exposed to things through family and friends. But seeing different ways of life in other cities, states, or even countries also allows us to learn new views and see life through a new lens.
We truly are the sum of both what we learn as well as our collective experiences. As we form into ourselves through our different paths and journeys, there will be times we interact with others from different places and regions than we find familiar. Having a bank of various experiences and interactions with people from different places with different ways of living and beliefs fosters a sense of connectivity between you and those you meet along your journey.
Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds is enriching, but it also requires cultural sensitivity. Understanding and respecting different perspectives is crucial for meaningful connections in new environments.
Home will always be where the heart is. Loyalty to your roots is far beyond maintaining a consistent presence in your city or state. However, extending your ties and connections beyond that helps reinforce lessons and growth in ways that will benefit you and your city.
For example, you moved across the country for a job opportunity. Initially homesick, you immersed yourself in local activities, gradually forming connections instead of isolating yourself. This experience will broaden your perspectives and enrich your life in unexpected ways.
While the allure of returning home during challenging times is undeniable, moving away often comes with its set of difficulties. Homesickness, adapting to new environments, and building a support system are common challenges. To navigate these hurdles, consider researching your new location beforehand, actively seeking social connections, and maintaining ties with your home community to create a support network. Join local clubs or organizations, and stay connected with friends and family from home to maintain a sense of familiarity and support.
It can be so tempting to pack up and head back to the place you know as home when things seem to be turning sideways or even falling apart. It’s never wrong to go back home to revamp and regroup, yet when you’re back out and trying to regain your footing; remember that what you learned and where you’re from is never too far from you. Being able to adapt and glean in various environments will ultimately make you a great representative of where you’re from, as well as a better citizen of any community you choose to contribute to!

In an exclusive celebration of creativity, Elton Qualls-Harris, CEO of Eight Ray Talent Agency, partnered with LALO Spirits and T's Buds Flower Shop to honor a select group of content creators on Valentine's Day. This special collaboration was a testament to Qualls-Harris's commitment to recognizing and nurturing creative talent.
Teala Dunn, Suekay Deniz, The Kyle Sisters (Paris Kyle & Sydney Kyle), Christine Obanor, Veondre Mitchell, Zaina Sesay, Meosha Davis, RUBA Wilson, Great Ezihie, Jarren Barboza, Kelon Campbell (Terri Joe), Demetre Durham, Roberto Hannibal, and Ashley Goldsun were among the lucky recipients of this exclusive gesture.

Many of us can trace our families back to generations where farming or agricultural methods brought both collective community and income. Historically, the share of Black and brown farmers in the US has been declining, risking both our cultural connection to various lands and the livelihoods of many families. However, in addition to recent legislative initiatives in Congress and renewed interest in sustainability and healthy eating trends, there are certain choices we can make as things continue to turn around both effectively and positively.
Advantages of Supporting Local
Checking out things grown or sourced in your state or region is a great way to support local farmers and businesses while keeping more of the profits in the greater community. These have effects that spread out, such as outreach and volunteering efforts on local farms or interest in farm culture and eventual work opportunities. There are currently many state and local programs aimed at Black and minority agricultural interests that can help match or locate events and gatherings nearby.
Healthy/Sustainable Eating
The ideal way of eating most of our meals fresh and organic is hopeful to think about and even aspire towards; though life, food prices, and the hectic schedules for many of us make this often difficult. By searching for and partnering with organizations and programs involved in nutrition and food habits, methods, and affordable options can be gained and incorporated into everyday life and overall meal prep ideas.
Ways to Incorporate at Home
Most people lack either the access or individual resources to tend to large plots of land or grow a large variety of crops and vegetables to eat. However, there are little ways you can incorporate sustainability and bursts of utility through small-scale efforts right at home or in a tight-knit space. It is often believed that having a few plants around the home can increase oxygen production and improve overall mood. Plus, choosing particular options to grow with low maintenance, such as various herbs (cilantro, thyme), peppers, or even Aloe Vera, can prove useful in recipes or remedies.
With more talk and interest about returning to our roots and creating a better dialogue around food habits, the need for farming and agricultural practices will always be relevant. Bringing the younger generation into the conversation early helps to both preserve history and tradition while fostering a new connection to health and wellness that will continue to benefit our community for many years to come!

Start Local
The best resources and inspirations are often already around you if you seek them with intent. Granted, your specific needs could possibly be sourced better in particular places due to industry or areas of study. Also, smaller towns may lack certain resources or niches that exist in larger communities. However, every place and person can hold value if honed right. Overlooking those influences right in your backyard could prevent you from moments of great guidance and perspective.
Follow Your Interests
Different mentors will bring out various strengths and skills based on the area of interest or expertise that one is seeking. Being more specific with your own interests and reasons for engaging in your specialty will aid in finding the best match for who could mesh well with your path and personality. Reaching out to both your own community and within your areas of interest can also be effective during your search while continuing to build connections among others gaining knowledge in the same spaces.
Stay in Touch
Over the course of life and events, it can be easy to slip up or even move on from communicating and even remaining in certain locations. Of course, some people and places are meant only for a reason or season. When possible, staying connected to a few of the people who helped pave your path is both a way to show respect as well as gain a partner during the journey of your interests or specialties.
To know how to be an effective leader or teacher, one first has to gain perspective on being guided and teachable. Being able to seek out both effective and positive mentors along your path will save much time and resources while helping you reach your goals effectively. Meeting great people and colleagues along the way is just a bonus as well!
