Less than two months into 2025 and Kemdrick Lamar has secured another huge achievement. His Super Bowl LIX halftime show is now the most watched half time show of all time. Surpassing Michael Jackson’s iconic Super Bowl XXVII halftime performance over 30 years ago.
Roc Nation, Apple Music and the NFL announced the feat on Tuesday (Feb. 11). The record performance had 133.5 million viewers glued to the screen, which outdrew the game’s 126 million, according to reports. Despite the history and narratives going into the game, more than seven million people were more invested in seeing the Compton rapper set the stage on fire.

Michael Jackson’s legendary 1993 performance drew 133.4 million viewers, meaning the 37 year old only edged out MJ by 100,000 people. The gap was a little wider in comparison to Usher’s instant classic performance last year that drew in a massive 123.4 million viewers. Nonetheless, the three most watched halftime shows of all time are from African American artists, a huge win for Black History Month.
Lamar’s halftime set featured spoken portions by Samuel L. Jackson, SZA, who he is set to tour alongside this summer, on their collaboration track “Luther” and “All The Stars” with special appearances by Mustard and tennis legend Serena Williams. As the world eagerly anticipated his GRAMMY Award winning hit “Not Like Us,” the Pulitzer Prize winner stared directly into the camera and smirked when he rapped the line “Say Drake.” Seconds later the camera cut to Williams as she crip walked to the track.

The inaugural event kicks off on February 17, from 8 PM to 10 PM, with tickets priced at just $15, available through 247 Live Culture’s website and Eventbrite. On Monday (Jan. 20), Flavor Flav took to social media to announce a new initiative, created in partnership with GoFundMe and the Black Music Action Coalition, to assist Black families impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires. The 65 year old is elated to see the support from across the country but wants us to not forget the most affected by the fires.
“It’s been inspiring to me, seeing a lot people coming together right now, lifting each other’s spirits. There’s not enough being done for the Black families and the communities. Come on, y’all. Let’s make L.A. strong, baby. Let’s help those in need.”
The beloved hype man and Public Enemy member urged other entertainers and celebrities to join him and others to contribute to the fund that has raised over 50,000 dollars.
“I’ve partnered up with GoFundMe and the Black Music Action Coalition to create ONE main GoFundMe campaign to immediately help those in need. I urge not only black artists and musicians and creators, but EVERYONE to come together and continue to help those in still in desperate need. Flavor Flav via IG”
The Los Angeles wildfires first broke out earlier this month in the Pacific Palisades, quickly spreading to other parts of the city, resulting in dozens of deaths and millions of dollars in property damage due to numerous homes being destroyed.
Celebrities impacted by the fires include Chris Brown, Tina Knowles, Jhene Aiko, John Legend, Kawhi Leonard, Tyra Banks and countless others.

Houston native and musical icon Beyonce through her non profit BeyGOOD has donated $2.5 million to those impacted by the Los Angeles fires. On Sunday (January 12th), the official Instagram account for the foundation announced their efforts, explaining what the donation will be used for.
“Los Angeles we stand with you. BeyGOOD is taking action by announcing the LA Fire Relief Fund with a donation of 2.5 million dollars. The fund is earmarked to aid families in the Altadena/Pasadena area who lost their homes, and to churches and community centers to address the immediate needs of those affected by the wildfires.”
BeyGOOD was created in 2013, the mission statement for the foundation states that it “serves people and develop impactful partnership programs through organizations assisting marginalized people and communities.”
Throughout its decade long history, BeyGOOD has given back to several causes. Most notably its efforts to aid those affected by the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Haiti. They also donated $82K in 2016 to the city of Flint, Michigan to help combat the Flint Water Crisis.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Los Angeles wildfires began as a brush fire in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood on Tuesday (January 7th). Almost 180,000 people were initially ordered to evacuate their homes after the devastating spread of the Eaton, Hurst, and Lidia fires. As of Sunday (January 12th), 24 people have died from the fires, per The Los Angeles Times.
Numerous celebrities and companies have pledged funds to Los Angeles since the start of the fires. According to reports, Disney pledged $15 million to those affected, while Fox Corp. and Paramount donated $1 million to the American Red Cross.

Back in October, the musical icon was petitioned to cancel his show in Johannesburg. According to the BBC, the South African organization Women for Change campaigned against the singer, stating that his past mistakes would “send the wrong message” to its citizens.

The song is a testament to overcoming dark times, inspired by the profound grief of losing close loved ones tragically.
“I wrote this song during one of the darkest periods of my life. Anyone that listens to my music can hear that I’m accustomed to loss and have turned to music as my outlet for it, but this record came to me during prayer, the day after my 11 year old Goddaughter was gunned down alongside her mother in my hometown. A lot of wounds that hadn’t fully healed yet were reopened with that loss and I guess you can say that was my breaking point fr. Thus the name Heartbreak 508. 508 is an homage to my city, it’s the area code for Worcester, but it’s also a depiction of how many times I’ve probably felt like my heart was breaking” says TyShawn.
The single combines heartfelt lyrics with compelling vocals that resonate with anyone grappling with heartbreak or disappointment.
“As for the takeaway, I really want this to be a record that people turn to when they’re grieving, or when they’re super in their head and feel like they can talk to anybody fr. I take credit for the song because it’s my voice but I really had no words left. I was broken and empty, and i’m not ashamed to say it but I felt my weakest. And while I was on my knees basically pleading to God to help me find strength he put these words in my heart. I didn’t even write the song like I went in the booth and did it so that’s important to me” says TyShawn.

Snoop Dogg is capping off a year full of wins with the release of his all new jewel line. The California native has partnered with Metal Alchemist and gamma to release “Lovechild.” The Doggfather’s very own distinctive collection of rings, bracelets and chains with ascents of his signature style and flair.
The name of the collaboration was intentional, as the cultural icon aims to spread light and positivity with his new line of products.
“I chose to name the collection Lovechild because I felt like the world is so full of anger and negativity and division, and I know that I lead with love. The news is quick to bring you bad news, so we are stepping in with a whole new force of love.”

“Lovechild is a child created from love. I’m choosing to lead with love… for the child that still lives within me, for the child that lives within everyone. I wanted to have a product I could share with the world that speaks to every element of who I am at this point in my life.”
The initial release consists of pieces for the entire family. Starting with the “Broadus RIng,” which pays homage to his last name, cuban link chains, the “Broadus Ring” with preset stones and cuban chain bracelets. Each product will be available in gold and silver with prices ranging from $188 to $1,388.

After nearly a year-long hiatus from the music scene, BIG JD returns with his latest project Turning Back Time in what he promises is his best work yet. The Jackson-born artist, known for his sharp lyricism, took a break to recalibrate both personally and artistically. Now, he’s back with a project that he promises will solidify his place in the local hip-hop scene.
“This project is something like my “welcome back” from nearly a year long break I took from releasing music. In the music itself, I reflected on a lot of the experiences I went through and lessons I learned in the past year.”
Scheduled for release on November 13th, Turning Back Time is a deeply personal exploration of the artist’s journey, while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The new project also explores themes that resonate deeply with his fanbase, such as resilience, mental health, and the ups and downs of everyday life. Each track seems to be meticulously crafted and is both raw and poetic.
“Expect the unexpected. Over that year I took off from dropping, I was still in the studio heavy recording new music and experimenting with new sounds. I’m learning to open up a bit more than I already have in my songwriting and making music that connects with my audience on a deeper level than before.”
Showcasing a more mature sound that reflects his growth over the past year, his break from the music scene, allowed him to find clarity and inspiration for the project.
“I can humbly say this is some of my best work yet. It’s always my goal to progress and be better than last time. I feel like the music was good before but it just had potential. In my time off from releasing, I learned new strategies of creating art and visuals that attract the right crowd and marketing and promoting the music so that it gets to as many of those people who need to hear it as possible.”
With his unique blend of vulnerability and energy, BIG JD is already gaining momentum across the South. Fans can expect live performances and appearances around the state soon, where he’ll share these new tracks that are sure to become anthems for Mississippi’s hip-hop community.

In arguably one of the most feel-good moments of 2024, Atlanta native and rapper Young Thug is finally home. Thanks to his attorney, Brian Steel, the 33-year-old rapper recently spoke to a group of law students about why their profession is so important.
“Brian Steel is the best person possible. He should be a professor. You guys should become lawyers. I think it’s very important to help people out of the situations they’re in the best you can. I mean, what side do you want to be on? You want to put people in prison for mistakes? Because everybody makes mistakes, they’re human. ”
The Grammy Award winner’s 15-year probation term mandates that he does community service, specifically speaking to students. Steel appeared at Emory University School of Law and called the “Hot” rapper so he could address the potential lawyers.
““You gotta always look at it like they’re there to put us in prison and you guys are here to keep us from prison.”
Thugger reminded the students that anyone could have been in his position. Reiterating that they should stick to their paths and offered himself as a resource.
“And everybody on this phone, in this classroom, you always need to know that you’re one mistake away. I feel like we need more people like Brian Steel on this earth and less people like that. So I think it’s very, very, very important to be a lawyer over anything. Lawyers and doctors are the two greatest things that were ever founded. You actually help people. That’s doing the real God work.”
Young Thug, real name Jeffrey Lamar Williams, was released from police custody on Wednesday, October 31st, after the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. He pleaded no contest to racketeering conspiracy and guilty to three drug charges, two gun charges and one gang charge. Although the terms of his probation prevents him from speaking with other gang members, He is permitted to speak with and work with fellow label mate Gunna.
During the final hearing, Thugger’s lawyer Steel broke down why the rap lyrics cited during the trial were misinterpreted and asserted the good that Thug has done for his community.

The wait is almost over. Summer Walker is about to give us the love jones we need for the fall with the release of her highly anticipated single “Heart Of A Woman” on Friday, October 25th. She teased the single in August on social media and the fans have been on her neck about releasing it ever since. While leaving us all impatiently waiting on the title and the release date for her next album she just released what appears to be the album cover on Instagram along with the release date for “Heart Of A Woman.”
The impact that her Over It album series has had on R&B during these times is something you can’t deny or hate on. A fan base was created and history was made. Let’s spill the tea, shall we? Her debut album “Over It” went 3x platinum, sold 134,00 the first week, and has now surpassed 2 million. She had the largest streaming week for an R&B album by any woman of all time. Her sophomore album Still Over It hit #2 on the Billboard charts selling over 160,000 and was the first number R&B album on Billboard in five years. The numbers don’t lie and the way the music makes you feel doesn’t either. Even if you aren’t “boy crazy” or the “crash out” type, the relatability behind her pen and the soul in her voice can make you cut off a man you don’t even have.
Why would we not be excited for this next one? Not to mention the growth in her stage presence and overall confidence as an artist has also been something wonderful to watch and makes me wonder not only about the upcoming album but what the tour will be like. Is she about to give us the heartbreak Summer we’ve been craving? Will the Aunties be putting this production together for the shows? The questions are endless but for now, all we can do is preserve “Heart Of A Woman” and wait for the R&B princess’ next move.

During this current era of Hip-Hop, Mental health has been at the forefront of many meaningful conversations within the genre. Most notably, during an interview with New York rapper Fat Joe on his new Starz series “Fat Joe Talks,” rapper and actor Method Man opened up about his struggles with depression. The 53-year-old rapper didn’t hold back as he revealed that he has dealt with depression on and off throughout his entire life and went on to describe how depression has never left him.
“It never really goes away. You have, like I said, I have bouts with it and things.”
As the dialogue between the two Hip Hop icons continued, Meth described how important it is to check in on your loved ones because you never know what others are dealing with.
“The point I’m trying to make is every now and then when you get a thought like, ‘Damn, I wonder what this person’s doing,’ act on it. Call them, see how they doing or find some way to get in contact with them. It never hurts. You have no idea how much that could mean to them.”
