Big JD Talks New EP 'Turning Back Time' and Promises His Best Work Yet

Jackson, Mississippi native Big JD returns after a year-long hiatus with his new EP Turning Back Time, promising a deeper connection with fans and showcasing his most personal and polished work to date. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

After nearly a year-long hiatus from the music scene, BIG JD returns with his latest project Turning Back Time in what he promises is his best work yet. The Jackson-born artist, known for his sharp lyricism, took a break to recalibrate both personally and artistically. Now, he’s back with a project that he promises will solidify his place in the local hip-hop scene.

This project is something like my “welcome back” from nearly a year long break I took from releasing music. In the music itself, I reflected on a lot of the experiences I went through and lessons I learned in the past year.
— BIG JD

Scheduled for release on November 13th, Turning Back Time is a deeply personal exploration of the artist’s journey, while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The new project also explores themes that resonate deeply with his fanbase, such as resilience, mental health, and the ups and downs of everyday life. Each track seems to be meticulously crafted and is both raw and poetic.

Expect the unexpected. Over that year I took off from dropping, I was still in the studio heavy recording new music and experimenting with new sounds. I’m learning to open up a bit more than I already have in my songwriting and making music that connects with my audience on a deeper level than before.
— BIG JD

Showcasing a more mature sound that reflects his growth over the past year, his break from the music scene, allowed him to find clarity and inspiration for the project.

I can humbly say this is some of my best work yet. It’s always my goal to progress and be better than last time. I feel like the music was good before but it just had potential. In my time off from releasing, I learned new strategies of creating art and visuals that attract the right crowd and marketing and promoting the music so that it gets to as many of those people who need to hear it as possible.
— BIG JD

With his unique blend of vulnerability and energy, BIG JD is already gaining momentum across the South. Fans can expect live performances and appearances around the state soon, where he’ll share these new tracks that are sure to become anthems for Mississippi’s hip-hop community.

In arguably one of the most feel-good moments of 2024, Atlanta native and rapper Young Thug is finally home. Thanks to his attorney, Brian Steel, the 33-year-old rapper recently spoke to a group of law students about why their profession is so important.

Brian Steel is the best person possible. He should be a professor. You guys should become lawyers. I think it’s very important to help people out of the situations they’re in the best you can. I mean, what side do you want to be on? You want to put people in prison for mistakes? Because everybody makes mistakes, they’re human.
— Young Thug

The Grammy Award winner’s 15-year probation term mandates that he does community service, specifically speaking to students. Steel appeared at Emory University School of Law and called the “Hot” rapper so he could address the potential lawyers.

“You gotta always look at it like they’re there to put us in prison and you guys are here to keep us from prison.
— Young Thug

Thugger reminded the students that anyone could have been in his position. Reiterating that they should stick to their paths and offered himself as a resource.

And everybody on this phone, in this classroom, you always need to know that you’re one mistake away. I feel like we need more people like Brian Steel on this earth and less people like that. So I think it’s very, very, very important to be a lawyer over anything. Lawyers and doctors are the two greatest things that were ever founded. You actually help people. That’s doing the real God work.
— Young Thug

Young Thug, real name Jeffrey Lamar Williams, was released from police custody on Wednesday, October 31st, after the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. He pleaded no contest to racketeering conspiracy and guilty to three drug charges, two gun charges and one gang charge. Although the terms of his probation prevents him from speaking with other gang members, He is permitted to speak with and work with fellow label mate Gunna.

During the final hearing, Thugger’s lawyer Steel broke down why the rap lyrics cited during the trial were misinterpreted and asserted the good that Thug has done for his community.

Summer Walker Set to Release 'Heart of a Woman' on October 25

The wait is almost over. Summer Walker is about to give us the love jones we need for the fall with the release of her highly anticipated single “Heart Of A Woman” on Friday, October 25th. We discuss it here!

Summer Walker

By: Sharmaine Johnson

The wait is almost over. Summer Walker is about to give us the love jones we need for the fall with the release of her highly anticipated single “Heart Of A Woman” on Friday, October 25th.  She teased the single in August on social media and the fans have been on her neck about releasing it ever since. While leaving us all impatiently waiting on the title and the release date for her next album she just released what appears to be the album cover on Instagram along with the release date for “Heart Of A Woman.”

The impact that her Over It album series has had on R&B during these times is something you can’t deny or hate on. A fan base was created and history was made. Let’s spill the tea, shall we? Her debut album “Over It” went 3x platinum, sold 134,00 the first week, and has now surpassed 2 million. She had the largest streaming week for an R&B album by any woman of all time. Her sophomore album Still Over It hit #2 on the Billboard charts selling over 160,000 and was the first number R&B album on Billboard in five years. The numbers don’t lie and the way the music makes you feel doesn’t either. Even if you aren’t  “boy crazy” or the “crash out” type, the relatability behind her pen and the soul in her voice can make you cut off a man you don’t even have.

Why would we not be excited for this next one? Not to mention the growth in her stage presence and overall confidence as an artist has also been something wonderful to watch and makes me wonder not only about the upcoming album but what the tour will be like. Is she about to give us the heartbreak Summer we’ve been craving? Will the Aunties be putting this production together for the shows? The questions are endless but for now, all we can do is preserve “Heart Of A Woman” and wait for the R&B princess’ next move.

During this current era of Hip-Hop, Mental health has been at the forefront of many meaningful conversations within the genre. Most notably, during an interview with New York rapper Fat Joe on his new Starz series “Fat Joe Talks,” rapper and actor Method Man opened up about his struggles with depression. The 53-year-old rapper didn’t hold back as he revealed that he has dealt with depression on and off throughout his entire life and went on to describe how depression has never left him.

It never really goes away. You have, like I said, I have bouts with it and things.
— Method Man, Fat Joe Talks

As the dialogue between the two Hip Hop icons continued, Meth described how important it is to check in on your loved ones because you never know what others are dealing with.

The point I’m trying to make is every now and then when you get a thought like, ‘Damn, I wonder what this person’s doing,’ act on it. Call them, see how they doing or find some way to get in contact with them. It never hurts. You have no idea how much that could mean to them.
— Method Man, Fat Joe Talks

The Wu Tang Clan rapper revealed a lot during his sit down interview with Joey Crack. Even hinting at a new memoir about the emotional weight of his life experiences entitled “Bring The Pain.”

It might be [titled], ‘Bring The Pain,’ because there’s a lot of that.
— Method Man, Fat Joe Talks

Later this month, Meth will be performing alongside Lucky Daye, Ella Mai and Dr. Dre at the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony in honor of new inductee Mary J. Blige. GloRilla Drops Track List and Feature List for Debut Album Glorious

GloRilla sent the internet into a frenzy by dropping her official feature list and track list, giving us the full lineup of what's coming. We discuss it here!

By: Sharmaine Johnson

GloRilla isn’t just making moves—she’s shaking the game up, and her debut album Glorious is about to prove it! In a pre-show chat with Extra before shutting down the VMA stage, she confirmed what we’ve all been waiting for: her album is dropping in October. And just like that, the GloRida fanbase went wild. Not long after, she kept the heat coming by dropping her latest single, “Hollon,” and locking in the release date—October 11. The way she moves? Impeccable. After ruling the summer with bangers like “Yea Glo” and “Wanna Be” off her Ehhthang Ehhthang EP (which might as well have been an album), she's bringing that same momentum into fall with her debut project, Glorious.

Today (October 7), GloRilla sent the internet into a frenzy by dropping her official feature list and track list, giving us the full lineup of what's coming. And listen, if I wasn’t already hyped, I’m now perched on the edge of my seat with my AirPods on standby, counting down to Thursday at 9 PM PST. The guest lineup is stacked: Latto, Sexyy Red, Muni Long, Kirk Franklin, Kierra Sheard, Chandler Moore, Maverick City Music, Megan Thee Stallion, Bossman Dlow, T-Pain, and Fridayy. Whew!

Now, it’s not exactly groundbreaking for rap artists to dip into the gospel pool, but GloRilla is clearly about to show us why her middle name is literally Hallelujah. She’s pulling in some of gospel’s finest, and I can only imagine the levels she’s about to take us to with these collabs. The way she’s been in her bag? Yeah, this one is about to hit differently.

Since bursting into the mainstream spotlight in 2022, GloRilla’s evolution has been nothing short of inspiring. She’s been a student of the game, sharpening her craft while leveling up her sound, look, and undeniable confidence. Whether touring with Megan Thee Stallion or dominating the stage at the VMAs and BET Awards for the second time, the growth is unmistakable. She’s experimenting, soaking up knowledge from the best, and most importantly, trusting her instincts—and it’s working. GloRilla is a force, and Glorious is about to be the moment.

Make sure you presave Glorious on all streaming platforms and be ready to listen when it drops on 10/11—because this is one debut you don’t want to miss!

Victoria Monét is showing us what it truly means to take the old-school route in a music world that moves at breakneck speed. With Jaguar II, released on August 25, 2023, she’s proving that a well-thought-out rollout is still the way to go. From the visuals to the continued promotion of the album months after its release, Monét is giving us that classic era approach we’ve been missing. It’s not just about dropping a few singles and moving on; she’s treating this project as the masterpiece that it is, and I’m here for it.

This album was crafted with intention—from the order of the tracklist to the songwriting and production, to the perfectly chosen features. It’s clear this wasn’t just thrown together; Jaguar II feels like an artist flourishing and finding her voice. When Monét announced she’s dropping a deluxe version, I couldn't help but get excited. This is what today’s music scene has been missing: artists who create full, cohesive projects and push them to their limits, making you fall in love with every track—even the ones you didn’t think would grab you at first.

Monét’s development as an artist has been on full display, especially after her incredible performance at the 2023 BET Awards. She gave us a taste of what she’s been working on, and it’s no surprise she’s continued to gain momentum since then. She’s no stranger to accolades either—let’s not forget her Grammy wins, which solidified her as a force in both songwriting and performance. As we look forward to Jaguar II (Deluxe), it's clear Monét is only getting better, and this deluxe release feels like the perfect way to celebrate her massive success while keeping the momentum going.

On September 26, Monét gave fans even more to look forward to, sharing the tracklist for the deluxe version of Jaguar II dropping on October 4. This edition will come with 10 additional tracks, including some heavy-hitting collaborations. Songs like "Don’t Sleep" featuring Thundercat and "SOS (Sex On Sight)" with Usher are already grabbing attention. But that’s not all—we’re also getting a duet with Bryson Tiller on "We Might Even Be Falling in Love." From these features alone, it’s clear Monét is pulling out all the stops.

Here’s the full list of new tracks on Jaguar II (Deluxe) :

1. Dick At Night

2. Don't Sleep ft. Thundercat

3. SOS (Sex On Sight) ft. Usher

4. 2Sext (Interlude)

5. 1900's

6. Love Is Stronger Than Pride

7. Everybody Needs Someone

8. We Might Even Be Falling in Love (Duet with Bryson Tiller)

9. The Greatest

10. The Greatest (Lovenotes Outro)

With this deluxe album, Victoria Monét is continuing her reign and giving us more of what we need—quality music and an artist who cares about the art of the album. She’s reminding us that music is meant to be experienced fully, not just consumed quickly and discarded. I can’t wait to hear what she’s added to the project and witness her next move.

Tyga and Offset Celebrate First-Ever Diamond Record for 'Taste'

Tyga and Offset just hit a major milestone in their careers, and it's all about that diamond status. We discuss it here!

By: Sharmaine Johnson

Tyga and Offset just hit a major milestone in their careers, and it's all about that diamond status. The RIAA announced on Tuesday, September 24, that Tyga’s 2018 hit “Taste,” featuring Offset, officially sold 10 million copies, earning both artists their first-ever diamond plaque. In a clip shared to X (formerly Twitter), EMPIRE CEO Ghazi Shami and COO Nima Etminan handed Tyga the plaque that celebrates this huge accomplishment. Offset didn’t miss a beat, sharing his excitement on X too.

Tyga took a moment to shout out his fans, writing, "Taste just went diamond 10x platinum😮‍💨🙏🏾 ..Thank you to everyone that streamed it and twerked to it 😀." Offset followed up with, "Went diamond today God is good," adding, "Man this big to me."

For those who don’t know, a song reaches “Diamond” status when it moves 10 million units. That includes digital sales and 150 streams counting as one unit. “Taste” was the lead single off Tyga’s Legendary album, produced by D.A. Got That Dope, and it’s been a club anthem since it dropped six years ago.

This puts Tyga and Offset in some legendary company. Artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, JAY-Z, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, and 50 Cent have all earned diamond plaques for their chart-topping hits. Earlier this year, Post Malone and Swae Lee's “Sunflower” went double diamond, selling over 20 million copies.

Right now, Tyga’s back on the road with Nicki Minaj, supporting her on the second U.S. leg of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The timing couldn’t be better for this well-deserved win.

Congrats to Tyga and Offset! They're officially in that diamond club.

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is back with another album, two years after the release of her Grammy-nominated LP, Good Morning Gorgeous. MJB announced that her new album, Gratitude, will be released this fall on November 15th.

She is also headed back on the road starting in January 2025 for her “For My Fans” tour. Dedicated to her adoring fans, the singer will star alongside R&B icons Ne-Yo and Mario. Blige made the announcement while on the nationally syndicated talk show Sherri.

During her appearance Mary J. also expressed what Gratitude meant to her and how she loves her ever-supporting fanbase and loved ones.

I mean, look at my life right now. I’m in a constant state of gratitude. I feel good. I have jobs and opportunities. I’m healthy. My family’s healthy. I have people around that care for me and love me and I have amazing fans for all the years of love and support that they’ve given me.
— Mary J. Blige, Sherri

Earlier this year in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Blige reflected on the impact her music has had on women of all ages and backgrounds.

I can say that, in my life right now, I opened so many doors. I’ve given women a voice to speak their truth. It seems like everyone from pop to R&B to every female is telling their life story or something that’s happened because I let them know in 1994 that it’s OK. I use it as my therapy, and so a lot of people are using their music as their therapy as well.

The world of music is in mourning following the passing of Frankie Beverly, the legendary frontman and founder of the R&B group Maze. A towering figure in the realm of soul and funk music, Beverly's unmistakable voice and profound contributions to music have left an indelible mark on generations of fans and fellow musicians. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly through the timeless songs he gifted the world.

Early Life and Formation of Maze

Born Howard Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, Frankie Beverly’s love for music began at an early age. Like many great singers, his roots were in gospel music, and he began performing in local church choirs as a child. In his teenage years, Beverly was heavily influenced by doo-wop and the burgeoning R&B sound, which led him to form The Blenders, a vocal group that captured the essence of 1950s and 60s vocal harmony.

However, it wasn’t until 1970 that Beverly would form the group that would make him an icon: Maze. Originally called Raw Soul, the group was eventually discovered by Marvin Gaye, who suggested they change their name to Maze. With this endorsement from one of the greatest soul singers of all time, Maze with Frankie Beverly as its lead singer began their rise to prominence.

Musical Legacy: Songs That Became Anthems

Maze became known for their smooth, soulful sound that blended elements of R&B, funk, and jazz. They quickly became a favorite among fans of soul music, delivering timeless hits like "Joy and Pain," "Before I Let Go," and "Golden Time of Day." These tracks weren’t just songs—they became soundtracks for life’s most joyful moments, whether at family cookouts, weddings, or neighborhood block parties.

"Before I Let Go" in particular has become an anthem in the African-American community, often serving as the unofficial close to parties and gatherings. The song’s infectious groove and celebratory lyrics embody the joy that Maze’s music has brought to so many. In fact, its influence runs so deep that Beyoncé covered the track in 2019, introducing it to a new generation of listeners while paying homage to its creator.

A Voice of Authenticity and Grace

What set Beverly apart from many of his contemporaries was his authentic voice—both literally and figuratively. His rich, soulful tenor conveyed an emotional depth that resonated with listeners. There was a vulnerability in his delivery that made the songs feel deeply personal, whether he was singing about love, heartache, or perseverance.

Unlike many in the music industry, Beverly wasn’t a flashy or boastful personality. He was known for his humility, grace, and dedication to his craft. Fans often commented on his warm, gracious demeanor, both on and off the stage. Despite Maze's massive success, Beverly remained grounded, always putting his music and his fans first.

A Touring Titan

Even as Maze's recorded output slowed in the 1990s, the group continued to be a dominant force in live music. Beverly's live performances became the stuff of legend, with sold-out shows across the U.S. and worldwide. It was during these live performances that the true power of Maze's music came to life. With every note, every lyric, Beverly connected with audiences in a way few performers could. His concerts were known for their uplifting energy, and audiences often left feeling more than entertained—they felt inspired.

Beverly's commitment to live performances also helped build an intergenerational fan base. Younger audiences discovered his music through their parents or grandparents, and they, too, found themselves swept away by the grooves and emotions embedded in Maze's music.

A Lasting Legacy

Frankie Beverly’s passing has left a void in the world of soul and R&B, but his legacy remains alive through the music he created. His songs continue to resonate with audiences of all ages, evoking feelings of joy, love, and resilience. In a career that spanned over five decades, he never lost sight of what mattered most: creating music that connected people and lifted their spirits.

His influence can be heard in contemporary artists across genres, from R&B to hip-hop, where Maze’s grooves have been sampled and reinterpreted. But beyond the notes and rhythms, it’s the soul of Frankie Beverly—the warmth, love, and authenticity he brought to his music—that will continue to inspire artists and listeners alike.

As we remember Frankie Beverly, we celebrate a man who dedicated his life to bringing joy and comfort to others through his music. His songs will forever be a testament to his artistry, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all those he touched. Rest in power, Frankie Beverly—a soul legend whose light will never fade.

The Weeknd revealed via Instagram the title of his highly anticipated new album Hurry Up Tomorrow in an ominous new teaser trailer. The four time GRAMMY Award winner’s latest effort will serve as the follow up to his 2022 release “Dawn FM.”

Hurry Up Tomorrow will dive into existential and self-referential themes, building on the visionary storytelling of its predecessors.

Yesterday was fourteen years ago. We held our breath, falling into a shimmering sea in the After Hours of the night... I look in the mirror and feel both old and new, stuck in limbo and unable to move. I still haven’t faced myself. More songs could help, but what do I have left to say? Woe is me in my gilded cage, right? The very thing that once made me invincible failed me on the world stage. A new trauma surfaced, opening floodgates. A new path awaits. When today ends, I’ll discover who I am.
— The Weeknd, IG post - album teaser

The global music icon has yet to announce a release date for his latest project, but he has shared snippets of new music on Instagram over the summer. This could be his last full length album under the moniker “The Weeknd.” In an interview last year he suggested that he is ready to close “The Weeknd” chapter.

I’m going through a cathartic path right now. It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.
— The Weeknd

In addition to a new album, The Weeknd will debut new music at his one night only concert on September 7th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Live Nation produced concert is currently sold out but will be live streamed across the globe on YouTube.

The Weeknd is also returning to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood next month with The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy. Check out the trailer below.

On Friday, August 30th, Big Sean cemented his return to music with the release of his new album, “Better You Than Me.” After a four-year hiatus and catching strays in one of the most historic rap beefs of the decade, he is back, he is better, and he is ready to share all of the blessings and lessons that he’s learned over these last four years of silence. To celebrate his resurgence from solitude, Sean hosted a listening party at NYA Studios in LA for friends, family, press, and fans to enjoy his latest labor of love.

“Imma keep it real with you. As we got to the end of the album, I was paralyzed. I was paralyzed with not knowing what the fuck to do,” he said. “I don’t know why life got so heavy on me at that moment. I was exhausted, I had COVID, and I had decisions to make. Do you want to put the album out, or do you want to wait?”

Big Sean shares a heartfelt speech during his listening party for Better Me Than You in Los Angeles.

The space was dark and mysterious, filled with smoke and a small circular stage surrounded by laser lights. As guests awaited Big Sean's grand entrance, we enjoyed complimentary drinks by JAJA, including Ranch Water, Margarita, Paloma, Tequila On The Rocks, and Gin & Juice. During the event, he spilled the tea on where his head was while creating the songs, offering a more in-depth understanding of the records as singles and the project as a whole. This transparency came as no surprise after he announced the album's release via an emotional Instagram Live.

When I got on IG Live and was emotional and sh*t, it was because I was defeated at that time. I was overwhelmed, I was fucking down bad, and I just felt like I wasn’t in the right vibration, Dawg. I talked to my mom on the phone, and she said, ‘You don’t have the power, God has the power. Do it, baby, do it!
— Big Sean

Clearly taking his mom’s advice, we find ourselves here, celebrating the release of his seventh studio album and his dynamic run as a top artist in the game. As he eagerly performed songs from the album, one of the most touching moments of the evening was when he shared the stage with his father while performing one of his favorite songs, titled “Type Cast.”

Big Sean's father joins him on stage as he performs "Type Cast" at his Better Me Than You listening party in LA.

At first listen, the album is a solid 9 out of 10, with the only point missing due to the lack of a rollout. This body of work has amazing production, the tracklist flows effortlessly, and Sean definitely brought the bars. The singles "Precision," "YES," and "Who You Are" were perfectly selected to cater to every type of Sean fan, with visuals to match. If you’ve wondered what Big Sean has been up to over the last four years, give “Better You Than Me” a spin and get filled in. Stream the album now on all platforms.

Beyonce announces the launch of SirDavis American Whisky, named after her paternal grandfather, in partnership with Moet Hennessy. Turning her love of whisky into a full fledged business venture, the “Renaissance” singer’s new liquor line will be available in September.

I’ve always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling. When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated. SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy. In partnering with Moët Hennessy, we have crafted a delicious American whisky that respects tradition but also empowers people to experience something new and unique in the category. You can taste it better than I could ever tell you — welcome, SirDavis. Beyonce Knowles, in a statement

On the whisky brand’s official website, the Houston native shared a photo of her grandfather Davis Hogue and penned a heartfelt open letter to him.

I feel you in the heat of the landscapes. Your laughter rolling in the rye. What songs did you sing? What gaps did you fill? Great-grandfather, did you dream of me? Your legacy is a force that drives me. Together, let us pour it, toast to this feat, and usher your craft into the future. For you, I raise my glass to legacy. We ride the movement. We savor the moment.
— Beyonce Knowles

Prior to its launch, the multi time Grammy Award winner submitted SirDavis under the pseudonym Davis Hogue Distilling Company. Winning multiple awards including Best of Class at the 2023 Sip Awards and a gold medal at the 2023 New York International Spirits Competition.

Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden helped craft SirDavis which is composed of 51 percent rye and 49 percent malted barley.

With SirDavis, we looked to challenge the category norms and offer something new in the space. The distinctive grain selection and unusual secondary maturation in sherry casks helped us achieve a signature profile completely unique to SirDavis, one of bold sophistication.

At roughly $90, the notably barley-rich whisky is intended to draw inspiration from the mouthfeel and texture of Japanese and Scotch whiskies. It is currently available for pre-order on the brand’s official website and will be released across the U.S. in September 2024.

The two-term POTUS has returned with another playlist of his summer favorites and this time he is boasting about his “eclectic” taste. On Monday (August 12th), the former president shared his “2024 Summer Playlist” on the popular social media site X.

With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately—and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to!
— Barack Obama, X

English singer Charlie XCX, Rapper Tommy Richman and South African songstress Tyla are a few of the standout favorites that made Obama’s rotation this year. Along with a few familiar favorites from Bob Marley, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Sting, Beyonce, Etta James, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, and Digable Planets, among others.

Also making an appearance were Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny, H.E.R., Tems, Willow, Cleo Soul, GloRilla, Saweetie, Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, and Moneybagg Yo.

American singer-songwriter Shaboozey shared his excitement on “X” after he learned that his hit song “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” made Obama’s annual list.

Obama’s 2023 Summer Playlist included artists such as Babyface Ray, JaNelle Monae, Money Man, Ayra Star, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and others. In an interview last year with comedic host Hasan Minhaj, Barack shared that his music taste is his and his alone.

Listen, I am so glad that I had this opportunity. People, they believe the books and the movies. But the playlists, they somehow think—and this is mostly coming from young people like you—somehow y’all think you invented rock ’n’ roll, you invented hip-hop. And so the fact that my lists are, you know, pretty incredible, people seem to think, ‘Well, he must have had some 20-year-old intern who was figuring out this latest cut.’ No, man. It’s on my iPad right now.

According to multiple reports, the award-winning songstress H.E.R. will perform the national anthem for the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday (Aug. 11). Entitled “Records,” the event will be held at the indoor Stade de France location and will focus on the Olympic games with a promise to “take spectators on a journey through time, both past and future.”

Joining H.E.R. on stage during the event will be legendary Grammy award-winning French rock band “Phoenix” along with the critically acclaimed band “Air.” Billie Ellish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snoop Dogg are also set to make an appearance, with Ellish and the Peppers performing hit songs from Los Angeles.

Thierry Reboul, the 2024 Paris Olympics executive director, shared his thoughts on the slate talent for the closing ceremony, while also hinting that a special teaser will be shown during the closing festivities.

Today, where we look at the history of music, it’s certainly the French music style and the artists behind it, who have had the biggest resonance in the world. So it was important for us to acknowledge it.
— Thierry Reboul, 2024 Paris Olympics Executive Director

_________

As per the tradition, Los Angeles has prepared a sort of teaser that lasts 10 to 15 minutes, and it’s dedicated to them, to show what their Olympic games will look like—and they’ve had all the freedom to create their segment. It’s going to include lots of things. We’re in charge of producing some things for them, but they are 100% in charge of it.
