Rihanna once again makes history, as the now mother of two has earned four new diamond certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her latest recognition sets a new record for female artists with seven diamond-certified titles in total.

“Needed Me,” “Work,” (feat. Drake) “Umbrella,” (feat. JAY-Z), and “Stay” (feat. Mikky Ekko), all joined the coveted diamond club towards the end of May. In April, “Diamonds,” and “We Found Love” hit the career milestone. Previously, “Love the Way You Lie,” (feat. Eminem) earned a diamond plaque in May of 2013.

While the Grammy Award winner continues to make history, she hasn't produced a proper album since 2016’s “Anti” project. Which features her diamond certified collaboration with Drake entitled “Work.”

The Barbados-native at the moment has not set a release date for any new album or single. In April, she shared her thoughts on anticipated new music.

It’s gonna be amazing. It has to be. That is the only reason it’s not out yet. If I’m not feeling it, and I’m not feeling like it represents the evolution, the time I spent away. There should be a show of growth, right? I want to play, and I feel like music is a playground, and I want to have fun with it and show truly where I am at.
— Rihanna, Extra

The multi-talented business mogul has remained quite busy despite the halt on new music, expanding her world-renowned Fenty enterprise. SAVAGE X FENTY, her lingerie brand, and Fenty Beauty, her inclusivity-themed cosmetics line, combined is worth over 1 billion dollars.

NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’ will feature an all-female lineup in celebration of Black Music Month this June. The lineup will feature Chaka Khan, SWV, Tierra Whack, Tems, Kierra Sheard, Lakecia Benjamin, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brittney Spencer and Flo Milli.

Producer and host of the successful concert series, Bobby Carter, shared his thoughts on the importance of spotlighting these legendary female acts.

As the first week started to roll out last year with Charlie Wilson and Babyface, it occurred to me that we were leading with all men. And to be honest, most of the bands that I aimed for, and most of the bands and the artists that I am most excited about from the legacy side, are women. So this time last year, I knew that we wanted to bring an all-female-led lineup this year.
— Bobby Carter, Tiny Desk Host & Producer

NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts celebrating Black Music Month are slated to release from June 3 - June 30 and will share the theme: “Giving women their flowers.” After each concert, musicians will receive their favorite flowers in honor of their impact and legacy. Also, NPR Music will produce short-form interviews for Instagram. With a few of the artists speaking about their musical journey and life experiences.

I hope people realize just how much Black women have contributed and have continued to contribute to music at large, they don’t get enough credit. Like I said, Chaka Khan will never get enough credit. SWV will never get enough credit. So it’s a reminder like we do every year. When you looked at Juvenile last year you were reminded just how impactful his music is. Same with Usher a year before last. This month is a reminder for those who may have forgotten just how great these women are.
— Bobby Carter, Tiny Desk Host & Producer

Legendary Rapper Rakim is set to release first studio album in over 15 years and marks the first full length album entirely produced by the Hip Hop legend.

According to Matthew “M80” Markoff, executive producer of Rakim’s forthcoming project, the album is titled God’s Network: “Reb7rth”. The album will include guest appearances by DMX, Nipsey Hussle, Prodigy, Method Man, Snoop Dogg, B.G. and more.

The project’s first single, “REB7RTH (N.W.A.) featuring Kurupt and Masta Killa, is set to be released on June 21st coinciding with the pre-order launch of the album. Pre-order copies will include autographed posters, vinyl copies, CDs, cassettes, digital downloads, merchandise and other items.

During a recent interview with VIbe magazine, “The Paid In Full” rapper spoke about his plans to release new music despite being over the age of 50.

There’s no limit to greatness, keep going. And that’s what Hip-Hop listeners gotta understand, man. If we still have the passion and we still love Hip-Hop and the music is good, there’s no reason to put a limit on age. Hip-Hop, we have people that’s over 60 that were born under Hip Hop, that still listen to Hip Hop, today. So do they have to keep listening to old school music or can we facilitate music for the listeners that’s still fans.
— Rakim, Vibe Magazine

God’s Network: Reb7rth will be released on July 26th, marking the resurgence of one of the genre’s most legendary figures. It will also be the first album for Rakim since his 2009 release, ‘The Seventh Seal.’

Nas Celebrates 'Illmatic' Anniversary with String of Live Shows in Vegas

Nas has announced that he will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Illmatic with a series of three symphony concerts in Las Vegas. We discuss it here!

Nas will continue the celebration of Illmatic’s 30th anniversary with a trio of orchestra-backed live performances in Las Vegas. Dubbed ‘Nas With the Las Vegas Philharmonic,’ the 3 day event will take place during Labor Day weekend at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

The Hip Hop legend gave a statement about performing in Las Vegas and how this experience will be one of the most unique performances of his career.

Las Vegas has always served as a creative outlet for my music, and these performances will take that to the next level. I am excited to partner with the Las Vegas Philharmonic to bring this first-of-its-kind performance to Encore Theater and to showcase my music to my fans in Las Vegas in a whole new way.
— Nas, Billboard

Nas’ debut album was released on April 19, 1994. Illmatic is widely regarded amongst hip-hop scholars and fans alike as one of the most significant bodies of work Hip Hop has ever produced. The impactfulness of this album led to its induction into the Library of Congress in 2021, one of only a handful of rap albums to earn that distinction. The rapper and businessman’s seminal album was credited with ushering in a new era of gritty New York street smart lyricism.

In April, the 50-year-old lyrical icon took to instagram to salute his collaborators on the album while also sharing a pair of vintage photos looking back at its creation.

I had a dream I could get my favorite producers to produce on my debut album. I knew exactly what I wanted and how it should be. But I didn’t know anyone except for Paul, so I asked him would he connect me to them all. The cool soul brother that he is helped me line it up. On April 19th we smashed sh*t.
— Nas, Instagram

Official album commemoration activities kicked last month as well. Nas has released a slew of new exclusive merchandise including crewnecks, hoodies, T-shirts, leather jackets and more. “The World Is Yours Rapper” also announced plans for a fifteen-date tour in Europe kicking off in Finland on October 22nd and ending in London on November 15th.

Tickets for ‘Nas With the Las Vegas Philharmonic’ will go on sale Friday (May 24) at 10 a.m. PT via Ticketmaster. Prices start at $69.95, plus applicable fees.

Buried Beneath the Beef: Kendrick vs. Drake Beef Opens Up Discussions Behind Stereotypes

The rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar opens up the discussion about misogyny and sexism that permeate hip-hop culture. We discuss it here!

Kendrick Lamar and Drake Ignite the Hip-Hop world with rap feud

By: Jamila Gomez

The rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has been a longstanding topic within the realm of hip-hop, captivating fans and critics alike. While much of the discourse surrounding their feud often centers on lyrical prowess, artistic vision, and cultural impact, there's an underlying narrative that often goes overlooked—the role of Black women's trauma.

Both Drake and Kendrick Lamar have risen to prominence within the music industry, garnering accolades and acclaim for their respective bodies of work. However, their approaches to addressing issues of race, identity, and gender have been markedly different, and it's within this divergence that Black women's trauma becomes a focal point.

Drake, known for his introspective lyrics and melodic style, has often been criticized for his portrayal of women in his music. While he's undeniably talented and has produced numerous hits, his songs have frequently been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and objectifying women. From references to "side chicks" to lyrics that depict women as disposable conquests, Drake's music has been called out for its problematic portrayal of female relationships.

On the other hand, Kendrick Lamar has earned praise for his socially conscious lyrics and unapologetic exploration of Black identity. His albums, such as "good kid, m.A.A.d city" and "To Pimp a Butterfly," delve into themes of systemic oppression, racial injustice, and the complexities of growing up Black in America. However, even within Lamar's body of work, there have been moments where his portrayal of women has been called into question, with critics highlighting instances of misogyny and sexism in his lyrics.

At the heart of the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar beef lies a broader conversation about the intersectionality of race and gender. Black women, who occupy a unique position at the nexus of multiple forms of oppression, often find themselves marginalized and overlooked in discussions about hip-hop culture. Their experiences of trauma, whether it be from systemic racism, misogynoir, or sexual violence, are often silenced or dismissed in favor of centering the narratives of Black men.

In the context of the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar beef, Black women's trauma becomes a battleground upon which their respective fan bases vie for dominance. While some may argue that Drake's music perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces patriarchal norms, others may point to Kendrick Lamar's lyrics as a more authentic reflection of the Black experience. In either case, it's Black women who bear the brunt of the trauma, forced to navigate a landscape where their voices are often drowned out by the cacophony of male egos.

As the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar continues to play out in the public eye, it's imperative that we center the experiences of Black women and acknowledge the ways in which their trauma shapes and informs the broader cultural conversation. Only by confronting the misogyny and sexism that permeate hip-hop culture can we begin to create a more inclusive and equitable space for all voices to be heard.

R&B superstar Usher Raymond is set to receive a key to his hometown in a special ‘Coming Home’ celebration on Saturday, April 20th.

In partnership with UTC (the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and Chattanooga Business Elite (CBE), the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County will host the special community-wide ‘Coming Home’ ceremony for their hometown hero.

In a statement, Usher thanked his childhood home for the continuous support and for providing the spark that ignited his music career.

The city of Chattanooga provided a spark that ignited the fire in me to pursue my dreams as a singer and I’m thankful for the support I received from so many great family members, friends, and mentors so early in my journey. Thank you for the honor, I look forward to celebrating with you all.
— Usher

Prior to his iconic Super Bowl Halftime Show, Mr. Raymond received the key to the city of Las Vegas for his musical contributions to the city with his three year-residency. Prompting Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly to ecstatically praise the talented artist's many accomplishments.

The pride in Chattanooga during Usher’s iconic Super Bowl halftime show was palpable. We know as a smaller city we punch way above our weight when it comes to the talent our city produces, and Usher is one of the finest examples of that talent. He’s going to feel the love when he comes home to McKenzie Arena on April 20th. I look forward to seeing y’all there.

From his days at Orchard Knob and Dalewood to the pinnacle of the music industry, Usher is one the great talents who have come through our public school system. I hope other young boys and girls across Hamilton County see Usher’s rise to the world stage and know that they have the same potential.

Sean recently shared in a video message released to social media that he will be making his debut as an author this fall and in the video he can be seen gushing over a project that he claims took “years in the making.”

I’m excited about a lot of things dropping this year but aside from the music, it’s another project that’s been years in the making and it’s finally time.
— Big Sean

In the announcement, he went on to add…

Anyone who knows me since I signed my record deal knows if you look at my old YouTubes I’ve always been about speaking from the heart, following your intuition and checking in with yourself mentally because that’s how I was raised. That’s the upbringing that was surrounding me with my family. It was a lot of elevated thinkers. They’d give me gems and these books from authors Deepak Chopra, Sadhguru, bell hooks, and others that I eventually read. If it wasn’t for them lessons and methods that I applied to my life, I fasho wouldn’t be here today, period.
— Big Sean

Following an 2022 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, ‘On Purpose With Jay Shetty’, Sean credited the host as the person who pushed him towards writing the book.

He was like, ‘Bro you gotta write a book. It’s a lot of people that you come from where you come from that don’t know how to get from point A to point B [and] look like you. They know they’re meant for more, just don’t know where to start.’ So, I wrote my first book.
— Big Sean

The ‘I Decided’ rapper concluded with…

I took all the lessons I learned, all the philosophies mixed with real-life experiences and condensed what works for me into these five strategies that really will teach you what success mean to you and show you what your purpose is if you don’t already know and show you how to find inner peace through all the turbulence of life.
— Big Sean

The book is set to be released this fall on October 8th. E-book and audiobook versions will be available upon release. Sean’s next album is also set to drop later this year and it’ll be his first since 2020’s Detroit 2.

I actually wasn’t even gonna put that song on the project. And my manager, he came to the crib and I played it for him, he was like ‘nah you gotta put this on. The people gone feel this.’ So I took his advice and listened to it. My homie Lonzo sent me another beat, and I started rapping the lyrics to Like Me on the beat and it fit perfectly.” said Westside Webb.

While many fans of the Snowman may mainly know of his immaculate work in the recording studio, the Atlanta native does have a new project in the works but it's not an album. Jeezy has been confirmed as the executive producer of the upcoming documentary Hip-Hop And The White House. The doc is set to explore the relationship between one of the most powerful cultural movements of the past 50 years and the most influential person on the planet, the President of the United States.

Hip Hop and The White House is the first of many to come from Andscape’s pending non-fiction anthology collection as a part of “&360”’s goal to explore the influence of Black culture on American society.

The documentary is written and directed by Jesse Washington. Washington, who is also credited as executive producer, has been a senior writer with Andscape since its inception as The Undefeated in 2014.

We feel this is the perfect time to discuss how hip-hop has influenced presidential politics, and to ask what we can expect from the culture in this upcoming election season. &360 provides an incredible opportunity to explore and illuminate important stories that have never been fully told. I’m looking forward to passing the &360 baton to the next storyteller and seeing new visions come to life.
— Jesse Washington

Hip Hop and The White House is the first of many to come from Andscape’s pending non-fiction anthology collection and is based on the work and research by their team of journalists.

“Mr. 17.5” is not only working behind the scenes on this project but is also narrating the documentary. The doc begins with Jeezy taking the audience on a journey that begins in the 1970’s and revolves around the political landscape that created conditions of oppression and neglect that ultimately created Hip-Hop, while continuing to chronicle the evolution of Hip-Hop culture.

Interviews and commentary are featured from a range of musical talent that includes Common, YG, KRS-One, Roxanne Shante, Bun B, Farai Chideya, Curren$y, Dave “Davey D” Cook, Grandmaster Caz, Waka Flocka Flame, and more.

Beyoncé Makes History Topping Hot Country and R&B/Hip-Hop Charts

Beyoncé achieves a historic milestone as the first woman to lead both the Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. We discuss it here!

It's time to add another significant distinction to the epic story that has been the career of one Beyonce Knowles. The Houston, Texas native has now made history becoming the first woman ever to top both the Country and R&B/Hip Hop charts.

According to sources, thanks to her latest single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” The 32 time Grammy Award winner is also the first Black woman to debut atop the Country charts. Along with the record breaking track, Bey released a second single “16 Carriages” in a surprise album announcement played during this year's Super Bowl. The Verizon ad showed a montage of different riffs that included “Beyonc-A.I.,” “Bar-bey” and even a presidential “BOTUS.” Before the commercial ended she uttered the phrase “Drop the new music,” soon after Beyonce’s official website updated with the announcement of “Renaissance Act II”.

With a strong backing from the Bey-hive, both singles have reportedly brought in millions of official streams, as the anticipation for her latest release mounts.

Though staying true to her Texas roots Beyonce’s transition into the country music scene hasn’t always been well received. Initially an Oklahoma-based country music station refused to play the single despite the song's significant traction.

A displeased fan took to Twitter, exposing an email showing the station declined their request to play “Texas Hold’Em.”

Feeling the sting of the Beyhive, the radio station initially claimed they never received the copies of the singles but has since added the songs to the rotation.

In a statement, the station’s General Manager explained the email denying the music request.

We initially refused to play it in the same manner if someone requested us to play the Rolling Stones on our country station. We are not a ‘big boy’ station and getting record companies to service us is tough. But…finally we got our hands on it, and based on the fan support, we decided to air it…truthfully, normally we would wait a while to see how the song performs on the charts and on bigger country stations than ours, as we are just the little guys.
— General Manager

Later adding…

We love Beyoncé’. We just were behind this country music changeover…. But, now that she’s coming out as a country artist, we want to be all over it……we are not fools…we know how big she is and we are happy to air it and wish her the best success.
— General Manager

Beyoncé and the Beyhive have done it again!

Bey’s full-length country album is set to arrive on March 29th.

In this new era of intimate exploration, Rakiyah unveils a fresh universe of dark fantasy and enchantment. Here, our love alchemist relentlessly seeks answers.

"Ready Or Not" is set to release on Thursday, February 15th, serving as an ode to those who've ever been unsure in love. This supernatural single dives into our faerie scientist's quest for truth, clarity, and her deepest desires. Rakiyah, in her pursuit of healing her tortured heart, employs nostalgic magical realism in visuals that complement her intoxicating lyricism.

"Ready or Not" stands as a spell-binding ballad with a pervasive Korean verse and hook that infiltrate the listener's subconscious like a powerful incantation. Across realms, Rakiyah's voice cuts through the ether to captivate. Her production invokes eerie promise and sensual whimsy. Even in the uncertainty of seemingly "unrequited love," Rakiyah alleviates apprehension with this mystical mantra.

Before emerging as the intriguing alternative R&B singer, songwriter, and producer she is today, Rakiyah had a career as an aerospace engineer, spending time studying abroad in South Korea. Her eclectic background has profoundly influenced her musical perspective. Missy Elliot has empowered Rakiyah's expansion into innovative production. The New Jersey native's surreal musicality reflects inspiration from icons like Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, and Tweet. Rakiyah's original fusion of dulcet tones and Korean-influenced euphony has evolved into this experimental, ambient R&B.

"Ready or Not" emerges as the culmination of Rakiyah's cadent vision.

Anticipating Cécred: Beyoncé's Haircare Revelation

THE Queen Bey sent an email blast that might have literally shaken the whole earth. Introducing Cécred - 2.20. We discuss it here!

By: Jayla Smith

Last night (February 7th, 2024) at 7:33 Pacific Standard Time, I nearly leaped out of my bed! THE Queen Bey sent an email blast that might have literally shaken the whole earth. Naturally, when Beyoncé speaks, we sure as heck listen… 'Look around, everybody on mute' or whatever the queen said. Introducing Cécred - 2.20 was the email summary. Honestly, I know how intriguing this sounds. What is Cécred (/ˈseɪ.krɪd/)? What is the 411?

In the middle of last year, on May 16, 2023, Beyoncé foreshadowed a haircare line via Instagram, teasing us with her precious insightful Instagram tactics. Although Beyoncé never really writes a caption in her photos, which, oh my gosh when she does, the girls squirm. However, in her photo carousel, she gave us a caption moment of its own.

How many of y’all knew my first job was sweeping hair in my mama’s salon? Destiny’s Child got our start by performing for clients while they were getting their hair done. I was exposed to so many different kinds of entrepreneurial women in her salon. I saw firsthand how the ways we nurture and celebrate hair can directly impact our souls. I watched her heal and be of service to so many women. Having learned so much on my hair journey, I’ve always dreamed of carrying on her legacy. I can’t wait for you to experience what I’ve been creating.
— Beyonce

Wait, but, it nearly does not stop there. Beyoncé so gradually invited many influencers to give them a tease of her haircare line. The collaboration included influencers such as Bet Man Rock, Jasmean, Makeup Shayla, Joyjah, and many more. Beyoncé picked up the influencers in a black luxurious SUV where a personalized audio note thanked them for joining her and her renaissance experience. They then arrived at the suite where they were able to meet Mama Tina. Along with the excitement of the concert, they were gifted with a gift bag of a Tiffany & Co necklace as well as a Renaissance tour book signed by Beyoncé.

@joyjah I’m lost for words! Beyonce knows who I am! I did not see this one coming. 😭😭😭😭😭 HAPPY BIRTHDAY QUEEN B!!! 🐝🐝🐝🐝 @Beyoncé #beyoncehairbrand ♬ original sound - Joyjah Estrada

Beyoncé is the brilliant force behind the magic of marketing. We are thrilled to witness her mastery at work with Cécred. As we anticipate the launch of a soon-to-be-winning hair care line, we can only imagine what is next.

Properly named after one of her most popular songs, Who’s That Girl?, the First Lady of the Ruff Ryders is finally telling her story in the form of a new memoir co-written by critically acclaimed hip-hop journalist and author Kathy Iandoli. Set to release later this fall on September 17th, the new book will chronicle the rapper’s rise to prominence in a male-dominated industry, her impact on hip-hop culture, and her iconic fashion choices.

I’m excited for people to get to know me on a deeper level. This story is decades in the making.
— Eve

Described as “Fearless, Empowering, and Inspirational,” the biography will also cover her struggles to balance her personal life with her professional hustle, providing more intimate details about her romance with husband Maximilllion Cooper and overcoming her fertility issues.

The book will also include an in-depth look at the multi-hyphenated icon’s gritty West Philly roots and previously untold recollections behind her discography. It explores how she made history as the first artist to win a Grammy for Best Rap-Song Collaboration with Gwen Stefani on Blow Ya Mind, became the third female rapper to have her solo debut on top of the Billboard 200, and entered the rap game under the moniker Eve of Destruction.
